Yes — dog poop can damage turf, whether it’s natural grass or artificial turf, but in different ways.
On natural grass:
Dog poop contains high levels of nitrogen and salts. While urine burns grass faster, poop can still cause yellow or brown spots as it breaks down. It also attracts flies, can spread parasites, and leaves behind bacteria that aren’t great for your lawn (or for anyone walking on it).
On artificial turf:
Poop won’t “kill” fake grass, but it can still be a problem. The solids need to be picked up, and the residue can stick in the turf fibers, causing bad odors and bacteria buildup if not cleaned. Over time, this can stain the turf and damage the infill, making it harder to keep fresh.
Bottom line:
Whether your lawn is real or fake, leaving dog poop there isn’t good. For artificial turf especially, prompt cleanup and rinsing with water (and sometimes a pet-safe cleaner) will prevent lasting smells and hygiene issues.
